Description
A flock of American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is gathered on the water's edge, with one pelican prominently displaying its wide-open beak. They exhibit their bright yellow and orange bills, contrasting with the subdued colors of their surroundings. A huge waterbird with very broad wings, a long neck, and a massive bill that gives the head a unique, long shape. They have thick bodies, short legs, and short, square tails. During the breeding season, adults grow an unusual projection or horn on the upper mandible near the tip of the bill. Pictured here is a cozy group on a small reservoir in Fishers, Indiana. These guys will be heading north to Wisconsin and Minnesota soon.
